This boat is great value, a good
balance of cost, durability and fun. It is lightweight and can be
folded to fit in a mid size duffel bag for travel. I have used K-79’s
on Class I and II rivers, flat water and in the ocean. Obviously
you must make your determinations and preparations regarding safety.
Friends and I have run coastal rivers with
these boats, including one four day trip. We have
taken them along on several fishing trips and enjoyed
near shore saltwater fishing, paddling and surf kayaking.
Sevylor makes a one piece, black plastic skeg, which they call a “Skeg”,
which easily attaches to the aft of the kayak. The Skeg is good for flat water and
saltwater use as it
improves tracking and straight line speed.
I have yet to put a tear in the boat
from typical use. Two exceptions have been a hole resulting from
jamming a large fish hook into the side tube and a cut on the bottom
from a broken bottle on a lake beach. Both resulted in fairly slow air
loss, owing to the low inflation pressure in these boats. The PVC
material is very easy to repair.
We retired one boat after five years of use. I have two K-79’s
currently, each two years old. We typically store ours inflated, but bleed
off a little air before storage. We “top off” the air pressure right
before we hit the water. The low cost of these boats and their surprising durability
make them a great acquisition.
